Background reading for a company project led me to reread this white paper from Microsoft Social Computing Research Group called Designing for Improved Social Responsibility and Content in On-Line Communities. From the paper (I changed the format to add the numbered list):
There are 3 major questions facing designers of on-line communities:
- how to get users to behave well,
- how to get users to contribute quality content, and
- how to get users to return and contribute on an ongoing basis.
These are challenging questions for any community builder. And the online rules are definitely different from the off line rules. I have also been rereading Urban Tribes. Interesting connections between the two.
